Royal Pump Room Museum

The Royal Pump Room Museum is located in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. Originally a spa water pump room, it now serves as a museum open to visitors. Designed and built by Isaac Shutt and completed in 1842, this Royal Pump Room sits above an ancient thermal spring. The spring water here contains natural minerals that can treat a variety of ailments ranging from gout to back pain, attracting many notable figures over the years, including Nicholas II Alexandrovich Romanov and Charles Dickens.

The Royal Pump Room ceased operations at the beginning of World War II and was opened to the public as a museum in 1953. It is currently managed and operated by the Harrogate Council. The water is no longer in use due to the detection of non-absorbable chemicals during an inspection in February 2012.

The mission of this museum is primarily to tell the story of Harrogate’s history as a spa center, accompanied by temporary exhibitions featuring items selected from a collection of 20,000 preserved by the city council. Most of the exhibits were generously donated by volunteers since the 1850s, covering artifacts from Egypt to items from the 1960s. In addition, the museum features a supervised children's activity area, which includes coloring boards, activity trails, and puzzles.
