Harrogate Royal Hall

Harrogate Royal Hall is located in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. It is a royal performing arts music hall and opera house, and its historic building has been designated as a Grade II listed building in the UK.

Built with donations spearheaded by engineering inventor Samson Fox, the Harrogate Royal Hall opened to the public in 1903 under its original name, the Kursaal. The building was co-designed by Robert Beale and Frank Matcham, two of the most prolific theatre architects of the time. Initially, it was not used for artistic performances but rather hosted grand receptions and special events. At the outbreak of World War I, the theatre was renamed to the more patriotically resonant “Harrogate Royal Hall.” In the 1950s, similar to many other theatres that transitioned into cinemas, the Harrogate Royal Hall became a local conference and exhibition centre.

Today, the Harrogate Royal Hall is an important national heritage building. It underwent extensive internal redevelopment between 2006 and 2008. Now one of the leading entertainment venues outside of London, it plays a significant social role in the Harrogate area’s social and economic landscape, striving to attract more audiences, tourists, and guests.
