Sister Shipton was a sorceress and a prophetess, a legendary figure of the 16th century whose prophecies made during her lifetime miraculously came true centuries after her death.

Sister Shipton (1488–1561) was born in England during the reign of King Henry III, in a supernatural cave by the River Nidd in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire—Shipton’s Cave. Her mother was just 15 years old when she gave birth to her, and she had no known father. From a very young age, she exhibited extraordinary psychic and prophetic abilities, which led locals to regard her as a demon. She moved into a convent at the age of 2 and remained there until the end of her life. At 24, she married Toby Shipton, a carpenter, and the couple had no children.

Sister Shipton prophesied many significant historical events, including the Great Fire of London in 1666, the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, and advancements in modern technology. She even foresaw her own death in 1561. To this day, her predictions remain astonishingly accurate and continue to baffle people.

Near Shipton’s Cave lies the famous Petrifying Well, an ancient well believed to possess magical powers that can turn objects into stone. Along with the various legends surrounding Sister Shipton, Shipton’s Cave and the Petrifying Well together have become one of the area’s most important tourist attractions.
