Many of you may have read the famous children's literature work Heidi, so you must know that its author, Johanna Spyri (1827–1901), was born in a small village called Hirzel on the outskirts of Zurich. She spent her early years here before relocating to Zurich at the age of 14.

From here, you can see gently rolling hills across from snow-capped peaks. Her former home is now a nursing home called Metaheusser Heim, and the elementary school she once attended has been transformed into the Heidi Museum, which is open to visitors. In this building, constructed in 1660, the first floor features photos and Heidi dolls in a cottage made from calla lilies. The second floor displays letters and other items related to Spyri. Although the exhibits are not numerous, the fact that this is the birthplace of Heidi makes it well worth a special trip to Hirzel.
