Established in 1878 as part of Zurich University of the Arts, the Museum of Design Zurich is a museum focused on industrial design, visual communication, architecture, and craft design. It holds international significance and undeniably influences the design scene in Switzerland and across Europe.

The Museum of Design Zurich is well known for its prestigious four major collections: posters, graphic design, industrial design, and applied arts. It is the only museum in Switzerland that houses all four of these collections. Its poster collection is the most important of its kind in the world, with over 350,000 poster works spanning all major periods in the history of poster design. Of these, 120,000 items have been cataloged and archived, forming an extremely valuable international-level resource. The graphic design collection is the most significant collection of Swiss design in the world, featuring more than 10,000 products and 20,000 packaging samples. The applied arts collection contains around 15,000 items and is the most important international collection of applied arts in Switzerland, including glassware, ceramics, textiles, furniture, and more from the 19th to 20th centuries.

In addition to being used for exhibitions, the museum’s extensive collections also serve as important teaching resources for Zurich University of the Arts, providing vital material for research and study by faculty and students.
