St. Peter's Church, Zurich

St. Peter's Church, Zurich, is located near Lindenhof hill and is one of the most well-known and important churches in the city. It is one of the four main churches in Zurich’s Old Town and was once the city’s only parish church.

St. Peter's Church was built on the site of a former temple dedicated to Jupiter. The early church from the 8th or 9th century measured 10 meters in length and 7 meters in width. Around the year 1000, it was rebuilt as a Romanesque church, transformed into Late Romanesque style around 1230, and reconstructed in Gothic style in 1460. The current structure was consecrated in 1706, making it the first church built during the period of Protestant dominance. Prior to the Swiss Reformation, St. Peter’s was the city’s only parish church, as all others were affiliated with monasteries. The church’s restoration was completed between 1970 and 1975.

The most striking features of St. Peter’s Church are its tall steeple and the clock on top. The clock face has a diameter of 8.7 meters, making it the largest church clock face in Europe, with a history dating back to 1880.
