Charen Reservoir

Charen Reservoir is located in Charen Town, Horqin Right Front Banner, 32 kilometers from Ulanhot. It is a major reservoir in Horqin Right Front Banner and one of the four largest reservoirs in Northeast China. The main body of the reservoir was completed in 1990. The dam stands 40 meters high, stretches 1,712 meters long, and is 6 meters wide at the top, blocking the annual runoff of 830 million cubic meters from the Tao'er River, a first-level tributary of the Nen River. The reservoir has a total storage capacity of 1.35 billion cubic meters, an annual power generation capacity of up to 26.64 million kWh, and an annual fish yield of 1 million kilograms. The reservoir features 80 square kilometers of water surface, bordered by mountains on two sides and by grassland and Charen National Forest Park on the other. The emerald lake, picturesque mountain ranges, lush grasslands, and dense forests blend seamlessly, earning it the reputation of “Jiangnan beyond the Great Wall.” Of particular note are the fish from Charen. The water quality of Charen Reservoir meets national Class I standards, ensuring that the fish grown here are free from pollution. The aquatic products from Charen Reservoir have successively obtained pollution-free, green, and organic certifications from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the National Ministry of Agriculture. They are sold as far as major cities in Northeast China such as Changchun, Shenyang, and Harbin, and have gained widespread recognition among consumers. Charen National Forest Park, centered around Charen Reservoir, integrates landscapes of mountains, water, grasslands, forests, and bird islands, offering breathtaking scenery. The park’s main area consists of over 60,000 acres of planted forest. After years of cultivation, it has now developed into a densely forested region with trees several meters tall and diameters of over 10 centimeters.

Charen Town is also the site of the shocking “Nakamura Incident,” which revealed to the world the true story of Japan’s invasion of China. In June 1931, Japanese Imperial Army intelligence officer Captain Nakamura Shintarō and others came to Charen to spy on military information. They were executed and their bodies burned on the orders of Guan Yuheng, the then Colonel in charge of Military Affairs and Commander of the Third Regiment of the Xing’an Reclamation Office of the Northeast Army. Japanese spy agencies used various means to learn the details of Nakamura’s execution. The Japanese Cabinet held a special discussion on the “Nakamura Incident” and threatened the Chinese government. Just 24 hours before September 17, Japanese Minister to China Shigemitsu Mamoru even issued a statement to both Chinese and foreign audiences, claiming that the “widespread rumors of mobilization of Japanese troops due to the Nakamura Incident were completely unfounded,” aiming to lull the Chinese authorities into complacency. Yet, just one day later, Japanese troops suddenly launched an attack on the Northeast Army’s garrison at Beidaying in Shenyang, bombarding the city and initiating the shocking September 18th Incident.

Charen Town: Charen Town is located in the northwest of Ulanhot City, covering a total area of 835 square kilometers. The terrain is mainly composed of low hills and hills. The Tao'er River flows from north to south through the town. The annual precipitation is 400 millimeters, the average temperature is 3.9 degrees Celsius, and the frost-free period lasts 110–120 days. The town administers 15 gachas (administrative villages), with a population of 21,000, of which 90% are Mongolian.
