Het Loo Palace

Het Loo Palace is situated in Apeldoorn and was constructed between 1684 and 1686. Initially built as a hunting villa for the Dutch Stadtholder William III, during the early 19th-century French occupation, Napoleon’s brother Louis Napoleon once resided in the palace, turning it into an astonishing architectural gem decorated in the French Imperial style. For the following three centuries, it served as the residence of the House of Orange. Queen Beatrix’s grandmother, Wilhelmina, spent her later years here in retirement, further enhancing its fame.

Since 1984, Het Loo Palace has been a museum, housing numerous royal artifacts. The palace itself and its surrounding gardens have been preserved to reflect their 17th-century appearance, offering a serene and beautiful environment that exudes comfort. Stripped of its royal mystique, the original elegance and romance of the palace are fully revealed. Het Loo showcases over 300 years of Dutch royal lifestyle, featuring priceless collections including paintings, textiles, mahogany furniture, documents, porcelain, silverware, royal court attire, gilded bronze clocks, and magnificent chandeliers—each piece leaving visitors in awe and telling the story of the Dutch royal family.
