Introduction Legend has it that in 356 AD, the Pope dreamed of the Virgin Mary, who commanded him to “build a church where snow falls tonight.” Although it was August at the time, snow fell here, so the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was built on the spot where the snow had fallen. Having undergone multiple renovations since its completion, the current basilica features architectural styles from various periods.

The 36 marble columns inside were brought from ancient Roman temples. The use of colonnades to support horizontal beams is a typical construction technique of early Christian churches. The mosaic on the main altar depicting 36 scenes from the Old Testament is a relic from the early 5th-century Christian period; the dome shines with the 13th-century golden mosaic “Coronation of the Virgin,” and there are also 13th-century mosaic decorations behind the corridor on the second floor. The bell tower, built in 1377, stands 75 meters tall and is the tallest in Rome. The Cappella Sistina (Chapel of Pope Sixtus V) on the right is from the late Renaissance period, while the Cappella Paolina (Chapel of Pauline) on the left showcases early 17th-century Baroque art.
