Toss two coins to make love smooth — Rome’s Trevi Fountain earns millions in tourist revenue every year

Travelers who have visited Europe have more or less experienced tossing coins into wishing fountains. The Trevi Fountain in Rome is one of the most famous wishing fountains in the world, and the amount of coins tossed here each year amounts to several million euros. Recently, the Roman government has begun to manage this tourist revenue through policy.

According to the Lonely Planet website,the Trevi Fountain receives approximately one million euros (about 34 million Taiwan dollars) in coins each year. The reason why travelers keep tossing coins is largely due to the long-standing saying that “if you throw a coin into the fountain, you’ll have the chance to return to Rome.”In fact, there are people assigned to collect these coins every day, bringing in about 3,000 euros daily. Now, the Mayor of Rome has proposed that these coins should be used for social welfare policies.

In the past, the money thrown into the fountain was actually donated to a Catholic charity organization in Rome, used for orphanages, dental care, and charitable supermarkets. However, over the past 10 years, the amount of coins collected from the fountain has tripled, which is why the Roman government is considering using this money for municipal purposes, as they are facing significant debt.
