Trevi Fountain

Introduction

The Trevi Fountain is also known as the "Fountain of the Maiden," but its most famous name is the "Fountain of Wishes." It is said that if you stand with your back to the fountain and toss a coin over your shoulder into the water, your wish will come true. Visitors line up at the fountain, turn their backs to the pool, and throw coins into the water, making a wish to return to Rome in this lifetime.

The fountain is located at the site of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, built in the 15th century. "Trevi" means "three streets," as three roads converge at the site. The central sculpture of the fountain depicts Neptune, the god of the sea.

Behind the fountain stands a majestic palace. The designer, Nicola Salvi, skillfully incorporated the surrounding architecture, blending the fountain seamlessly with the palace sculptures to create an even more spectacular view. The reliefs on the palace walls tell the story behind the fountain: legend has it that a young maiden showed the location of the spring to the Romans, and Agrippa found the water source based on her directions, then constructed the aqueduct—hence the name "Fountain of the Maiden." Transportation   Located next to the Quirinal Palace (the presidential residence), take Metro Line A to the Barberini station and walk for about 10 minutes.
