The Colosseum

The Colosseum was built between 72 and 82 AD and is a symbol of ancient Roman civilization. This site is located in the center of Rome, the capital of Italy, south of Piazza Venezia and near the Roman Forum. The Colosseum is an exemplary masterpiece and marvel in the history of architecture, renowned worldwide for its grandeur, majesty, and magnificence. Although only the large skeleton remains, its majestic aura and overwhelming presence still endure.

The Colosseum has an elliptical layout, covering an area of approximately 20,000 square meters. Its outer wall stands 57 meters high, equivalent to the height of a modern 19-story building. The structure consists of four levels, entirely clad in marble on the exterior. The lower three levels each feature 80 arches, with columns arranged in the distinctive order of Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian styles. The fourth level is adorned with small windows and pilasters. At the center is the arena, measuring 86 meters long and 63 meters wide, also elliptical and about the size of a football field. Beneath the arena lies the hypogeum, where wild animals and gladiators were held. The seating around the arena is divided into three sections. The first level at the bottom was reserved for the emperor and nobility, the second level for the upper-class Roman citizens, and the third level for the general public. Above that are large balconies, where ordinary spectators could only stand to watch the performances. The arena could accommodate over 50,000 spectators, and the ground floor had 80 entrances to ensure that all 50,000 people could be evacuated within 15 to 30 minutes.
