Statue of Moses

Moses is the national leader of the Jewish people recorded in the Old Testament as living in the 13th century BC, and is regarded as an extremely important prophet in religions such as Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the Baháʼí Faith. The Statue of Moses is a marble sculpture created by the famous Renaissance artist Michelangelo between 1513 and 1515, standing 235 centimeters tall. It is one of Michelangelo's masterpieces and also one of the world’s most famous statues, currently housed in the Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome, Italy.

In 1505, Pope Julius II planned to build a tomb for himself that would be unparalleled in the world, and summoned the celebrated sculptor Michelangelo to work on it. Among all the sculptures completed for the tomb, the most famous is the Statue of Moses. In the statue, Moses’ head is held upright with authority, his hair is short, his gaze is piercing, and his beard cascades down in waves, much like the figures on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. He bends his right leg as if about to rise to his feet, exuding strong leadership presence. Unlike other depictions or sculptures, Moses has two horn-like protrusions on his head. It is said that in Latin, horns symbolize "power" in some sense, thus adding even more expressiveness to the image of Moses.
