Fountain of the Four Rivers

The Fountain of the Four Rivers is located in the center of Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy. Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and built in 1651, it is a masterpiece of the peak period of Baroque art. The fountain represents the four great rivers of the four continents as imagined by Renaissance geographers: the Nile of Africa, the Ganges of Asia, the Danube of Europe, and the Río de la Plata of the Americas.

Here, the artist used four marble human statues to symbolize the four rivers, with a rockery and an Egyptian-style square granite obelisk in the center, signifying the triumph of Catholicism across the world. The base of the Fountain of the Four Rivers is surrounded by a large pool, at the center of which is a pile of limestone forming the artificial rockery, with the fountain’s water outlets set within it. On the rockery, four elderly figures sit in different poses, facing the four cardinal directions.

From a purely aesthetic point of view, this is indeed a magnificent and thought-provoking group of sculptures. The four elderly figures representing the four symbolic rivers of the continents each display distinct ethnic characteristics and individuality, offering insight into the cultural essence of each continent. For example, the white horse beside the figure symbolizing the Ganges of Asia naturally evokes the Buddhist story of “the white horse carrying the scriptures”; the hands of the figure representing the Danube of Europe are shaped like a dancing pose, symbolically connecting to the refined manners of Europeans and the elegance of the Danube.

The four giants appear to be casually seated on the rockery, with natural and relaxed expressions. Jets of water spout irregularly from various crevices and fountains in the rockery—some forceful, others gentle—and under sunlight, they shimmer brilliantly, giving the entire fountain a lively and charming charm.
