If you hear someone mention Rome’s “eighth hill,” they’re referring to Janiculum Hill. It’s a hill located in the western part of Rome and is the second highest within the modern city limits. However, Janiculum Hill is not one of the Seven Hills of Rome because it was not within the ancient city boundaries. This hill is famous as it offers some of the most beautiful views in Rome.

From Janiculum Hill, you can see the most stunning and magnificent vistas of Rome, with the entire city spread out before you in its full glory. Today, it’s a peaceful and tranquil place, but you might not know that this was once where Garibaldi’s forces fought the French in a battle for control of the Papal States. To commemorate this struggle, a canon shot is fired every day at noon from the hill. There’s also a beautiful garden here, which houses many remnants from the Garibaldi era.
