Caelian Hill

Caelian Hill is one of the Seven Hills of Rome. During the reign of Tullus Hostilius, the entire population of Alba Longa was forcibly relocated to the Caelian Hill. According to Livy, the hill was named after Caelius Vibenna either because he established a settlement there or in honor of him by his friend Servius Tullius after his death.

During the Republican period, the Caelian Hill was a fashionable residential area and a neighborhood for the wealthy. Archaeological work beneath the Baths of Caracalla has uncovered remnants of luxurious villas adorned with frescoes and mosaics. Churches on the Caelian Hill include the Basilica of Saints John and Paul (Santi Giovanni e Paolo) and the ancient Santo Stefano Rotondo.
