Palatine Hill

Palatine Hill is one of the central hills among Rome’s seven hills and is one of the oldest preserved areas in modern-day Rome, Italy. Rising over 40 meters high, the hill offers a view where the Roman Forum lies on one side and the Colosseum on the other. Etymologically, the English word “palace” comes from the name of Palatine Hill (Palatium), with Italian “Palazzo” and French “Palais” also derived from it.

Rome originated on the Palatine Hill, and recent archaeological excavations suggest that people have lived here since around 1000 BC. During the Roman Republic (510 BC to 44 BC), many wealthy Romans owned property on this hill. The remains of palaces belonging to Augustus (63 BC to 14 AD), Tiberius (42 BC to 37 AD), and Domitian (51 to 96 AD) can still be seen today. This site was also the location of the festival of Lupercalia.

A building believed to be the residence of Augustus’s wife, Livia (58 BC to 29 AD), is currently under restoration. Nearby is the palace of Cybele, the Mother of the Gods, which has not yet been fully excavated and is not open to the public. Behind this building, on the other side of the hill, lies the so-called House of Tiberius. Today, Palatine Hill serves as a vast open-air museum and can be visited during the day for a small fee, with the entrance located near the Arch of Titus in the Roman Forum.
