Palazzo Barberini

Palazzo Barberini is a palace in Rome facing Piazza Barberini and housing the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica. Three great architects created this palace, each contributing their own style and character to the building. Carlo Maderno, who was at the time extending the nave of St. Peter's Basilica, was commissioned by Pope Urban VIII to build a grand villa with gardens. Work began in 1627, and Maderno’s nephew, Borromini, became his assistant. After Maderno’s death in 1629, Borromini and Gian Lorenzo Bernini worked together to complete the project in 1633.

Palazzo Barberini is one of the most magnificent Baroque buildings in Rome. Today, part of it serves as a military club, while another section houses the National Gallery. The gallery boasts an impressive collection, including masterpieces such as *La Fornarina*, believed to be Raphael’s portrait of his lover, and Caravaggio’s *Narcissus*. The Barberini family produced popes, so the grand residence exudes an air of nobility. In the movie *Roman Holiday*, the embassy where Princess Ann stays was filmed here.
