Militia Tower

Militia Tower is a medieval tower in Rome, Italy, attached to Trajan's Forum in the Imperial Forums. Legend has it that the Roman Emperor Nero built this tower to watch the Great Fire of Rome, earning it the nickname "Nero’s Tower.” However, the tower was actually constructed during the time of Pope Innocent III (1198–1216). The Militia Tower in Rome is a red brick structure completed over 80 years and is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Originally composed of three parts, the Militia Tower had its spire damaged in an earthquake in 1348. The main structure still stands to this day, though the upper portion is precariously tilted. It has been hailed by many international media outlets as one of the world’s most uniquely leaning towers. The tower has a square base, and scientists and engineers estimate its height to be nearly 150 feet (45.72 meters). Its sturdy construction is believed to have withstood a second earthquake. The tower leans 1.36 degrees to the northeast, and it is predicted that the degree of tilt will increase over the next 600 years. From a distance, the towering Militia Tower stands out prominently among Rome’s classic ancient architecture, adding a distinctive touch to the city’s overall skyline.
