Pantheon

The Pantheon, also translated as the Pantheon Temple or the Temple of all the Gods, is located in present-day Rome, Italy. It was an ancient Roman religious building that was later converted into a church and stands as one of the most significant architectural achievements of ancient Rome. In 609 AD, the Byzantine emperor donated the Pantheon to Pope Boniface IV, who renamed it the Church of Santa Maria ad Martyres (Saint Mary and the Martyrs), which remains its official name today.

The structure of the Pantheon is simple yet striking. Its main body is circular, topped with a dome that has a diameter of 43.3 meters — the largest in the world from its construction until 1436. The dome’s highest point is also 43.3 meters, with an 8.9-meter-wide circular oculus at the top that serves as the building’s only source of natural light. This oculus allows sunlight to pour in and shift throughout the day with the movement of the sun, creating a sacred and solemn atmosphere that perfectly suits the nature of a religious building.

The marble floor features a grid pattern that is slightly raised in the center. When standing in the middle of the temple and looking around, the grid pattern appears distorted, further enhancing the illusion of a vast interior space. In front of the circular main structure is a portico that is 34 meters wide and 15.5 meters deep, supported by 16 granite columns, each carved from a single block of stone. The columns stand 12.5 meters tall and have a base diameter of 1.43 meters.

The entire Pantheon is constructed from poured concrete, but how the builders of the time managed to create such a massive dome with this material remains a marvel. The Pantheon is a masterpiece of ancient Roman architecture and has had a profound influence on the development of Western architectural history. Countless architects during the Renaissance came here for inspiration.
