Basilica of Saint Lawrence outside the Walls

The Basilica of Saint Lawrence outside the Walls is located in Rome, Italy. It is a minor papal basilica and one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome. The basilica commemorates Saint Lawrence, a Roman deacon who was martyred in 258 AD and buried within the church. Pope Pius IX is also interred in this papal basilica.

In the portico of the basilica’s colonnade, two ancient stone sarcophagi are buried, and two Romanesque stone lions have been moved from the entrance to stand in front of them. Additionally, within the entrance of the basilica lies the tomb of Cardinal Guglielmo Fieschi, who died in 1256. Inside the basilica are a Gothic choir and pulpit, adorned with exquisite Gothic candlesticks.

The arches of the basilica feature Romanesque mosaics depicting Jesus and various saints. Moreover, both Saint Lawrence and Saint Stephen are buried beneath the high altar. The relics of Saint Stephen were transferred here during the construction of the Basilica of Saint Lawrence under Pope Pelagius II. The papal altar is situated directly behind the high altar.
