Tiber Island

Tiber Island is a boat-shaped island in the Tiber River within the city of Rome, Italy, located at a bend in the river. It is the only island in the stretch of the Tiber that flows through Rome. Approximately 270 meters long and 67 meters wide, it has long been associated with healing and therapy.

Since ancient Roman times, the island has been connected to the other parts of Rome by two bridges and was once referred to as the "island between two bridges." Rome's only original surviving bridge, the Fabricio Bridge (Ponte Fabricio), connects the island to the Campus Martius in the Sant'Angelo district (left bank) to the northeast. The Cestio Bridge (Ponte Cestio), which retains only part of its original structure, connects the island to the Trastevere district (right bank) on the south shore.

One legend says that in 510 BC, after the overthrow of the hated tyrant Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, an angry mob threw his body into the Tiber River. His corpse sank to the bottom, and debris and silt accumulated around it, eventually forming Tiber Island. Another version of the legend claims that people collected the wheat and grain they despised from their ruler and threw them into the Tiber, which eventually became the foundation of the island.

In ancient times, before the introduction of Christianity to Rome, people generally avoided Tiber Island due to its negative associations. Only the most serious criminals and those with infectious diseases were sent there. However, this changed after temples were built on the island. Nowadays, the "Isola del Cinema" (Island of Cinema) film festival is held on the island every summer.
