National Musical Instruments Museum

The National Musical Instruments Museum is located in Rome and was established in 1974. It is one of Europe’s renowned musical instrument museums and a must-visit destination for musicians and music enthusiasts, allowing you to immerse yourself in a sea of music and enjoy the wonderful sounds produced by a wide array of instruments.

The National Musical Instruments Museum features a rich collection of precious and exquisitely crafted instruments that captivate visitors. It is divided into 18 exhibition halls, showcasing 840 out of the over 3,000 items in its collection. These instruments come not only from Western countries but also from nations in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. In addition to modern instruments, the museum also houses classical instruments from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, representing traditional music and culture. The displayed instruments include folk instruments, religious instruments, household instruments, royal instruments, march instruments, military instruments, mechanical instruments, and excavated fragments of ancient instruments. The oldest instrument in the museum dates back to 1602, while fragments of ancient instruments can be traced to the Roman era or even earlier.

It is worth mentioning that the museum’s Chinese Ancient Musical Instruments Exhibition Hall has officially opened to the public, featuring, for the first time, traditional Chinese folk instruments such as the yueqin, suona, trumpet, erhu, sheng, conch shell instrument, pipa, bajiao drum, guzheng, and sanxian.
