The Church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza is located in Rome, Italy. It is a Roman Catholic church built between 1642 and 1660 by the architect Francesco Borromini and is considered a masterpiece of Baroque church architecture. It is one of the most famous churches in Rome.

The Church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza is dedicated to Saint Ivo (the patron saint of lawyers), hence its name. The design merges the church’s façade with the courtyard of a palace, and its interior features dazzling geometric forms that create a complex rhythm. It is a rational structure that appears chaotic, yet its plan is based on overlapping concentric circles of equilateral triangles, forming the foundation for a series of hexagonal chapels and altars within the centralized church. The undulating interior surfaces create a discordant yet dizzyingly enchanting effect, and the decorations combine cherub heads with geometric patterns—offering a more Platonic aesthetic compared to the excessive use of gold leaf and stucco by contemporary artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The main artwork inside the church is the altarpiece depicting Saint Ivo, painted by Pietro da Cortona.

The dome of the Church of Sant’Ivo features a highly innovative spiral lantern, an extraordinary feature that directly inspired the design of the spire of Vor Frelsers Kirke (Church of Our Saviour) in Copenhagen, Denmark.
