The Millennium Church in Rome

Covering an area of 108,414 square feet, the Millennium Church in Rome was designed by Richard Meier & Partners. The three curving walls beside the sanctuary are made from over 300 precast grayish-white concrete panels, rising gradually from 56 feet to 88 feet in height, resembling white sails. The activity center on the church’s north side is a rigorous square concrete structure. Designer Richard Meier described: "The circle represents completeness, symbolizing the dome of the heavens. The square embodies the earth and is also a symbol of rationality." The church’s glass roof and skylights allow natural light to pour in, giving worshippers a strong sense of being protected under the wing of a great force.
