Balzac once described the château during a lunch as “a exquisitely carved diamond set in the Indre River.” It is one of the most famous châteaux in the Loire Valley, and compared to others, it is relatively small in size, with its main structure divided into two parts surrounded by the Indre River and a scenic garden.

The current English-style garden was designed and built in the 19th century—it was during that time that the western pond was constructed. After the French government regulated the flow of the Indre River in 1959, a second pond was added.
