Château de Loches is located in Loches, in the Loire Valley of the Indre-et-Loire department in France. Step back in time to when it was one of the most beautiful fortified cities in France. Its majestic 36-meter tower was once among the tallest of its era and remains one of the best-preserved today. Built in the early 11th century by Fulk Nerra, Count of Anjou, this model of military architecture was later transformed into a prison by Louis XI. The royal lodgings near the tower are a gem of French Renaissance art and have also played an important role in French history. They were once the favorite residence of the Valois monarchs. One side of the lodgings opens onto a terrace offering sweeping views of the city and the Indre Valley. The royal apartments hosted notable figures such as Joan of Arc, Agnès Sorel—the favorite mistress of Charles VII—and Anne of Brittany.

Entering the old town from the tower’s lodge and passing through the keep, visitors are immediately immersed in the atmosphere of a medieval prison: Tower of Louis XI, iron hammer, interrogation room, graffiti-covered chambers, dark dungeons, solid fortifications, crypts… In stark contrast, the gardens beside the royal apartments offer serenity. The medieval garden features vine-covered trellises, lush green lawns, and natural barriers formed by willow trees that bring tranquility. Inside the royal apartments, visitors can admire beautiful Flemish tapestries, armor, paintings, and other treasures.
