Old Port
Introduction The Old Port is a unique attraction located in the heart of Marseille. 2,600 years ago, the Greeks discovered this small bay known as Lacydon. Today, it is a harbor that can accommodate up to 350 recreational boats.
The area around the Old Port boasts many renowned historic sites, including Fort Saint-Jean and Fort Saint-Nicolas, both built during the reign of Louis XIV as defensive fortifications. The “Old Port” isn’t actually very old—it was rebuilt after World War II—but locals continue to call it by that name, out of habit and perhaps also a sense of historical attachment.
The Old Port district is the heart and essence of the entire Marseille region, not only because it is the birthplace of the city, but also because the authentic spirit of Marseille can be best experienced here.
