Abbey of Saint-Victor
Introduction The Abbey of Saint-Victor was built in the 5th century on the ruins of the ancient city and has stood majestically on the southern shore of the Old Port. After several instances of destruction, the abbey was fortified under Pope Urban V in the 14th century.
The crypt of the abbey contains important relics from the 5th century as well as numerous sarcophagi from that time, holding the remains of many Christians and pagans. The tombs of the two oldest martyrs buried in the crypt are remnants from the abbey’s earliest days. It was from this abbey that the Christianization of the entire Provence region began. Transportation Take the metro to the Vieux Port station and walk for 3 minutes to reach the site.
