Introduction

Continuing northward along the coast, you’ll arrive in Iquique, which is located 492 kilometers from the city of Antofagasta and takes two and a half hours by plane from Santiago. Thanks to its expansive coastline and unique free trade zone, this city has experienced quite rapid economic development. Another wonder here is its old town, where visible history remains. In the past, the city reached the peak of its economic development thanks to its abundant nitrate production. However, when nitrate was suddenly replaced by chemical technology, the industry gradually disappeared, leaving these towns with only phantoms that testify to their former glory.
