Casa Colorada

Casa Colorada is a colonial-era house located in Santiago, the capital of Chile. It was designated as a Chilean historic heritage building in 1960 and is one of the best-preserved colonial houses in Santiago. Today, this historic building houses the Santiago Municipal Museum and has become a quite popular tourist attraction in Santiago.

Built between 1769 and 1779, Casa Colorada served as the official residence of Chile’s first president after independence. This two-story building features a clay tile roof, windows with balconies, and deep red exterior walls — the reason it is called “Casa Colorada” (Red House). It is a representative example of Santiago’s colonial architecture, built with the last splendor of the colonial era.

Today, the Santiago Municipal Museum inside Casa Colorada uses maps, photographs, and panoramic images to illustrate the city’s transformation from the colonial period to the present day. In addition to viewing the exhibitions, the grand entrance gate, stone-built ground and upper floors, and the terraces outside each window all clearly demonstrate that it is an outstanding example of colonial-style architecture.
