Potosí

The city of Potosí in Bolivia sits at an altitude of 3,967 meters, nestled at the foot of Cerro Rico in the Andes Mountains. It is the highest city in the world and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987. Due to its high elevation, the climate here is cold and dry, with an average annual temperature of 10°C and only 380 mm of annual precipitation. However, the surrounding area is rich in mineral resources, particularly lead, tin, and copper, making it a famous mining hub. The city preserves a large number of well-maintained colonial-era buildings. Numerous narrow, winding streets radiate from the central square, surrounded by colonial government complexes, city halls, mints, and cathedrals.

The city also features ruins such as the Casa de la Moneda, the Church of San Lorenzo, noble residential areas, and workers' quarters. The buildings around the central square feature a mix of Baroque and Mestizo architectural styles. The secular architecture of Potosí is characterized by neoclassical or romantic elements. The ancient city is home to numerous religious buildings, including the Church of La Compañía, the Church of San Juan Bautista, the Church of San Domingo, the Church of San Nicolás, and the Church of San Benito. Major structures in the old town are interconnected; the streets twist and turn, naturally undulating with the terrain, creating numerous small plazas at street junctions and in front of churches. The ancient architectural complex is set amid lush palm trees, adding to the city’s enchanting charm.
