The spiritual and political center of the Tiwanaku culture

The Tiwanaku ruins are an ancient indigenous cultural site in Bolivia, located on a highland plateau at an altitude of about 4,000 meters, approximately 20 kilometers south of Lake Titicaca on the border between Bolivia and Peru in South America. The ancient city was originally built by the lakeside, but as the lake gradually receded, the currently discovered ruins are now about 20 kilometers away from the lakeshore. The Tiwanaku site features a large collection of religious structures, painted carvings, as well as a highly developed ancient indigenous culture.

This site is constructed from massive stones weighing dozens or even hundreds of tons, tightly fitted together. The broken walls, giant stone statues, stelae, long stone walls, and scattered megaliths throughout the ruins allow one to imagine the prosperity of this once-sacred religious center. The Sun Gate is one of the most famous ancient monuments in the Americas and an outstanding example of Tiwanaku culture. The Akapana Pyramid is the largest structure in the site, with a rectangular base measuring 180 meters by 140 meters. The pyramid was built by utilizing a small hill and layering stone blocks over it, with various forms of architectural remains found at its summit. There is also a structure resembling an underground reservoir. In addition to its majestic architecture, the pyramid's stone slabs and blocks feature many exquisitely carved human-shaped stone deity statues. According to calculations by Bolivian scholars who have devoted their lives to studying Tiwanaku culture, using astronomical obliquity of the ecliptic, the ancient city may have been built around 17,000 years ago.
