Introduction

The Museum of Peruvian Gold and World Weapons, commonly known as the Gold Museum, is located in the Monterrico district of Lima. It is a privately owned collection museum, established in 1966.

The museum's exhibits mainly come from the collection of Miguel Mujica Gallo, an agronomist, financier, and diplomat. It is divided into two major parts: The first section displays weapons from around the world since the 16th century, including sabers used by heroes of the Latin American independence wars, weapons used by Napoleon, ancient Chinese swords and blades, as well as various uniforms, armor, and horse tack—all exquisitely crafted and beautifully designed. The second section houses a collection of gold and silver artifacts, mummies, clothing, carvings, and pottery unearthed in Peru from the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD. These items offer valuable insight into the famous Moche, Chimú, and Nazca cultures of Peru, as well as the customs and daily lives of ancient indigenous Peruvians, and are of high artistic value.

The museum has been designated as a national cultural heritage site by the Peruvian government. Some of its exhibits have been displayed in North America, Europe, Japan, and several South American countries. The museum also houses a cane-sword gifted by Chairman Mao. In October 1995, Chinese Premier Li Peng visited the museum, inscribed the words “A splendid cultural heritage, the crystallization of a collector’s dedication,” and presented a replica of the “Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow” artifact. In May 2000, the Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference visited the museum, inscribed “A treasure of Peruvian culture, the pride of the Inca civilization,” and gifted a set of ancient coins.

Monday–Sunday, 10:30–18:00. Closed on January 1, May 1, July 28, and December 25 each year.
