Introduction

Lima is the capital and largest port city of Peru. Located on the western coast of Peru along the Pacific Ocean, it has little rainfall throughout the year and is known worldwide as the “City of Eternal Spring.” The winter months are often foggy and humid.

Thanks to its convenient harbor, Lima was established as the capital of Peru in 1535. During much of the colonial period, Lima remained the most important political and commercial hub in South America. This glorious past is reflected in its colonial-era architecture, which also earned the city UNESCO’s designation as a “World Heritage Site.”

The urban area of Lima is quite large. The old town is located in the northwest, closest to the airport, where most historical buildings and landmarks are concentrated. The new town lies in the southeast, home to newer hotels, banks, and business centers, making it a more desirable residential area. The liveliest nightlife can be found in San Isidro, extending from the new town along the coast further southeast.
