Introduction

At the top of Corcovado Mountain near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, stands a massive 30-meter-tall stone statue of Jesus Christ, the largest of its kind in the world. In 1921, when Brazilians were celebrating the 100th anniversary of their independence, it was proposed to erect a giant statue of Jesus Christ on Corcovado Mountain, with the Savior spreading his broad arms to embrace the city. Construction of the statue began in 1921, and after 10 years of painstaking work, it was finally completed and unveiled atop Corcovado Mountain in 1931.

The statue is enormous, weighing 200 tons, with a span of 23 meters between the fingertips of its outstretched hands. Depicted in flowing robes and with arms outstretched, the Christ figure gazes affectionately over the stunning panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro below, symbolizing a spirit of compassion and reverence for independence. Facing the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean, the open arms of the statue appear from afar like a colossal cross—majestic and solemn. The figure of Jesus blends harmoniously with the surrounding mountains, and drifting clouds that occasionally drift among the peaks make the statue alternately visible and hidden, adding to its mysterious and sacred aura. This colossal statue, perched at the summit of the high mountain, can be seen from most parts of the city, both day and night, making it the most iconic landmark of Brazil’s famous city, Rio de Janeiro.
