Guanabara Bay

Guanabara Bay is located on the western coast of Rio de Janeiro, stretching 31 kilometers in length and 28 kilometers in width, with an entrance about 1.61 kilometers wide, making it the second-largest bay in Brazil. It was first discovered by the Portuguese on January 1, 1502. In 1555, the French established a fortress on Villegagnon Island and named this bay "Guanabara Bay." In 1565, the Portuguese returned to drive out the French.

Guanabara Bay is dotted with several islands, including Villegagnon Island, Governador Island, and Cobras Island. At the bay’s entrance stands Sugarloaf Mountain, where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro from the summit. Surrounded by lush tropical rainforests, long stretches of beaches, bizarrely shaped rocks, and towering peaks, Guanabara Bay is one of the world’s premier travel destinations. Busy passenger and cargo ships dock here daily, making it one of Brazil’s most active bays. At sunset, the bay glows golden, as the sun lingers atop Sugarloaf Mountain. People playing on the beach gaze longingly at the bay, reluctant to leave, immersed in its beauty.
