CN Tower

The CN Tower (also translated as Canada National Tower or Canada National Tower) is a Canadian television tower and landmark. Originally, the “CN” in its name stood for “Canadian National,” but it now represents “Canada’s National,” although both names are rarely used. Located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the tower stands at 553.33 meters tall and is currently the third tallest freestanding structure in the world. It is considered an iconic symbol of Toronto, attracting over two million visitors annually.

Since its completion in 1976, the CN Tower held the Guinness World Record for the tallest building until it was surpassed by the Guangzhou Tower and the Burj Khalifa. However, from a technical standpoint, the CN Tower is not classified as a building. It was constructed in 1976 by the Canadian National Railway Company to showcase Canada’s industrial strength. Initially designed as a broadcasting antenna, it featured microwave receivers at 305 meters for transmitting advance signals, while the main broadcast antenna is located at the very top. The tower also houses a 447-meter-high metal staircase with 1,776 steps — the highest metal staircase in the world — which is reserved for emergency use.

In 1995, the CN Tower was included in the American Society of Civil Engineers’ list of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. It is also a member of the World Federation of Great Towers. The following year, the Guinness World Records reclassified the CN Tower as the “world’s tallest building” and the “world’s tallest free-standing structure.” In September 2009, the 610-meter-tall Canton Tower in Guangzhou was completed, taking over the title of the world’s tallest tower from the CN Tower.
