Located in Toronto, Canada, the Bata Shoe Museum was established on May 6, 1995, as a knowledge center that introduces visitors to the important role of shoes in human culture and society. With a rich collection of over 12,000 items from around the world spanning 4,500 years of history, it is the largest shoe museum in the world. Through a variety of activities and exhibitions, the museum allows visitors to explore the stories hidden within each pair of shoes from different countries and cultural backgrounds.

The Bata Shoe Museum itself is an architectural masterpiece. One of the design intentions of the building was to transform the street corner into a gateway to the University of Toronto. The museum has three floors above ground and one below, with a business center at the entrance on the first floor, which provides ticketing, exhibition information, and souvenir sales. Exhibits are spread across various locations on the four floors, occupying over 60% of the museum’s total area. The exhibits are organized around several themes, such as nationality, ethnicity, religion, function, celebrities, and highlights of the collection. In addition, there are often special exhibitions related to footwear.

The oldest shoe in the Bata Shoe Museum’s collection was excavated from a 4,000-year-old Egyptian tomb, while among the modern pieces, the most famous is a pair worn by “the King of Pop,” Elvis Presley. Of course, you can also find shoes worn by the captivating diva Madonna and basketball giant Shaquille O’Neal here. Perhaps the most surprising find is a pair of leather shoes once worn by Chinese film star Tony Leung Ka-fai. Most of the exhibits are shoes from various eras and regions around the world, reflecting the real-life conditions of different historical and cultural backgrounds through their diverse forms.
