Kouklia Archaeological Site

Attraction Introduction

Located 5 km from Kolossi Castle. It developed as a colony in the 14th–13th centuries BC when the Achaeans from the Peloponnese region of Greece arrived here. The main attraction is the ancient Roman open-air theater, which could accommodate 2,000 people.

The theater was built in the 2nd century BC, damaged by an earthquake in the 1st century AD, and rebuilt in the 2nd century. Originally, it could seat over 3,500 people. In the 3rd century, it was popular for animal combat events, and small animal enclosures can still be seen beneath the stands. Nowadays, the theater is also used for performances during the summer.

Nearby lies the ruins of public baths built after the major earthquake in the 5th century. They were destroyed in the 7th century. The sauna and resting rooms were adorned with beautiful mosaics, some of which can still be faintly discerned today.

It is one of the most famous and distinctive archaeological sites on the island.
