Attraction Introduction

Famagusta (Famagusta), also known as Ammochostos, is located on the eastern coast of Cyprus in Famagusta Bay and serves as the administrative center of the Famagusta District. Established in the 3rd century BC, it was originally the island’s largest seaport city and during the Eastern invasion, it served as a key stepping stone connecting Asia Minor and Europe.

Famagusta attracts thousands of tourists with its pleasant climate, golden and soft sandy beaches, and numerous modern tourism facilities. The old town preserves many historical relics from different eras, among which the “Othello Castle” is especially captivating. The Othello Castle is situated in the northeastern corner of Famagusta, overlooking the vast blue Mediterranean Sea.

The castle stands about 15 meters high and is built entirely of rectangular, beige stone blocks. Viewed from the sea, it presents a rather majestic sight. Legend has it that this was the encampment of the Moorish commander Othello during his time stationed on the island, and it is here that he fell victim to a plot and tragically killed his beautiful and innocent Desdemona. During the day, visitors can explore the castle’s scenery; at night, they can sit in front of Othello’s parade ground and watch the tragic play reenacted on the very spot where it unfolded.
