Attraction Introduction

Larnaca (Larnaca), anciently known as Kition, is an ancient city in the eastern part of Cyprus. “Larnaca” means “sarcophagus” in Turkish, named after the many sarcophagi found in the area. The capital of Cyprus is Nicosia, but the most important city for travelers is Larnaca, because it serves as the island’s gateway by air. Most tourists arriving in Cyprus by plane first land in Larnaca before traveling on to other parts of the country.

Larnaca was once an important stronghold of the Phoenicians on the island and was damaged during the Greco-Persian Wars. After being occupied by the Turks, it gradually developed into a significant city and seaport, though it was later overshadowed by Famagusta. The area is home to the famous Hala Sultan Tekke mosque in the Islamic world, located about 5 km west of the Larnaca Salt Lake. It is said to have been built by the Turks in honor of Umm Haram, the aunt of the Prophet Muhammad. In 647 AD, she fell from her mule and died while accompanying the Arab forces attacking the region, and was buried here.

The mosque houses her tomb, above which stands a gate made of three large stones, with the middle slab said to have been miraculously transported from Mecca overnight and considered a precious relic. The Larnaca Salt Lake is also one of the island’s scenic highlights. It serves as a habitat for birds, and when flocks of flamingos fly over the lake, their pink reflections shimmer in the blue water, creating a uniquely beautiful sight.

Larnaca is a coastal city, and in summer, the beaches are dotted with sun umbrellas. The city center is along the seaside promenade and the parallel Zinonos Kitieos Street. The promenade is paved with stone slabs and lined with numerous restaurants and eateries, while Zinonos Kitieos Street is home to the Pierides Foundation Museum, a hub for local life and entertainment. At night, clubs, game centers, and discos light up, creating a lively atmosphere.
