Attraction Introduction

Limassol is located on the southern coast of Cyprus, by the Akrotiri Sea, boasting picturesque scenery and is the island's second-largest city. Today, Limassol is a modern coastal city, known primarily for its long-famed wine and grape products, with the island’s two largest wineries situated here. In addition, it is home to the largest fruit canning factory in the Middle East. Over the past 20 years, Limassol has developed rapidly—over half of the island’s exports and 90% of its imports pass through this port. It has replaced Famagusta as the main center for import-export trade and maritime shipping, becoming Cyprus’s gateway to the sea.

Historically, Limassol was situated between two ancient city-states: Amathus to the east, now in ruins, and Kourion to the west, where a large open-air Roman amphitheatre still stands and hosts performances every summer. In 1191 AD, during his campaign to Jerusalem, Richard the Lionheart of England made an unscheduled stop here due to bad weather and married Berengaria of Navarre in a castle nearby. From then on, the area flourished and took the name Limassol, replacing the former Amathus.

Limassol boasts beautiful scenery and many modern hotels. To attract tourists and meet cultural needs, the city hosts various cultural and recreational events every year, including the Limassol International Festival, Wine Festival, Flower Festival, Carnival, and Fruit Festival. Among these, the Wine Festival is the largest and most popular.

The Wine Festival is usually held from late September to early October in the Municipal Park. During the event, crowds flock to the lively festivities, where participating wineries and merchants showcase and sell their products in individual pavilions. Visitors can sample a variety of wines for free upon purchasing a single admission ticket.
