The Bagan Archaeological Museum officially opened to the public on April 17, 1998. It is located in the world-renowned ancient city of Bagan, adjacent to the Gawdawt Palin Pagoda, and is one of the most important museums for understanding Bagan’s history. The museum is built in the traditional Bagan architectural style, is relatively large in scale, and boasts a rich collection. Its numerous exhibits of Buddhist artifacts, such as statues and carvings, vividly showcase Bagan’s ancient Buddhist culture.

The first floor of the museum mainly displays handicrafts such as terracotta ware, stucco art, wood carvings, stone carvings, metalwork, and painted pieces, offering visitors a visual impact. In addition, this floor showcases 55 ancient hairstyle templates for fashionable women from the Bagan period, and vividly depicts the daily and military life of the region at that time through inscriptions and art exhibitions. The second floor primarily focuses on religious activities in the area, featuring many Buddha statues in various poses, facial expressions, and styles, seemingly designed to help visitors learn about iconography. This floor also hosts several art exhibitions, all themed around religion. The floors above the second level lead to a rooftop terrace where worshippers, visitors, and travelers can enjoy a panoramic view of the ancient city of Bagan and quietly await the beautiful sunset.
