Bupaya is located on the right bank of the Irrawaddy River in Bagan, Mandalay Region, and is a well-known pagoda in Bagan. The original structure is widely believed to have been built between 168 and 234 AD. It is one of the most prominent among the thousands of religious sites in Bagan and is famed for its sunset views.

The original Bupaya was destroyed in a major earthquake in 1975, with the pagoda crumbling into fragments that fell into the Irrawaddy River, a loss that was deeply lamented. Between 1976 and 1978, Bupaya was rebuilt using modern, sturdy construction materials, and its spire was gilded. Unlike typical pagodas, Bupaya features a bell-shaped dome covered in gold, gleaming brilliantly, and has become one of the most prominent landmarks along the Irrawaddy River. Bupaya is the best spot in Bagan to watch the sunset — as the sun sets behind the tip of the pagoda, casting radiant white light, squinting at the scene gives the illusion of shimmering reflections and a mirage-like spectacle.
