Mang Xian

Mang Xian refers to limestone caves located on peaks nestled between narrow valleys. These caves once served as carefully constructed residences and shelters for the leaders and troops of the Pathet Lao until the revolutionary victory in 1975, when they moved out after residing there for about a decade.

The Mang Xian caves are remarkably solid and fully functional, playing a significant role during the war years and reflecting the revolutionaries’ strong will to fight for national independence and unity. Today, these historically meaningful caves—named after their former occupants—have been opened to visitors and have become the main attraction in Sam Neua.

Among these caves, “Tham Than Khamtay” is particularly fascinating. It was associated with the former President and Pathet Lao leader, Kaysone Phomvihane. The cave contains the original bed, clothing, office equipment, books, a portrait of Che Guevara, and a meeting room for the Politburo. It is said that up to 3,000 Pathet Lao soldiers were once hidden here. Nowadays, many of the caves in Mang Xian have beautiful gardens built around them, making these relics of hardship more reminiscent of holiday resorts.
