The main stream of the Mekong River is 4,180 kilometers long, making it Asia's most important transnational river system, the tenth longest river in the world, and the seventh longest in Asia. Its primary source is the Zaqu River, which originates in Zaduo County, Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, China. It flows through China’s Yunnan Province, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, before emptying into the South China Sea in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. As the Mekong flows from north to south through Laos, there is a roughly 50-kilometer stretch near the Laos-Cambodia border where the river widens significantly. During the rainy season, the widest parts can reach up to 14 kilometers, making it the broadest section of the Mekong within Laos. In the dry season, when water levels recede, this area gives rise to hundreds of small islands — over a thousand if you include islets and sandbars. Locals, with a touch of exaggeration, refer to this region as the "Four Thousand Islands."

Don Khong is the largest island among the Four Thousand Islands. Along with Don Det and the nearby Don Khon (connected by a bridge), it is considered one of the three most tourist-friendly islands in the region. However, Don Khong is relatively quiet, and most visitors opt for Don Det and Don Khon. These two islands offer more affordable accommodation, are close to the Mekong River waterfalls (which are within walking distance), and have plenty of bicycle rental options, allowing travelers to explore by bike. Of course, you can also take a boat tour to cruise between the islands, taking in the beautiful scenery, local culture, and spectacular Mekong sunset views.
