Bolaven Plateau
The Bolaven Plateau is a plateau in southern Laos, with an altitude ranging from 1,000 to 1,350 meters. It is situated within the provinces of Champasak, Attapeu, and Saravane, between the southwestern foothills of the Annamite Mountain Range and the Mekong River, bordering Vietnam to the east. The Bolaven Plateau receives an average annual rainfall of 3,743 millimeters, making it the wettest region in Laos.
Historically, both French colonial rule and the Vietnam War have had a profound impact on the development of the Bolaven Plateau, gradually shaping its unique character. Agriculture and tourism serve as the main pillars of the region’s economy. The gently undulating plateau is home to a variety of fruits, vegetables, and cash crops such as cardamom, coffee, and rubber. With several rivers flowing across the plateau, numerous spectacular waterfalls have formed, contributing to the area's well-developed tourism industry.
