Burana Tower

Burana Tower (Burana Tower) is a large minaret located in the Chuy Valley in northern Kyrgyzstan, about 80 kilometers east of the capital Bishkek, near the town of Tokmok. The Burana Tower, along with a surviving fortress, burial stones, and three mausoleums nearby, are all remnants of the ancient city of Balasagun, established in the late 9th century by the Karakhanid dynasty (Karakhanids). A very steep and winding staircase extends from the exterior of the tower up to the top floor inside, allowing visitors to climb to the summit and enjoy the surrounding views.

Originally 45 meters tall, the Burana Tower has suffered significant damage over centuries of earthquakes. A major earthquake in the 15th century destroyed the upper half of the tower, reducing its height to the current 25 meters. In 1970, Kyrgyzstan began restoration work on the tower, focusing on repairing the foundation and western section. The site of the Burana Tower, along with its surrounding tombs, fortress, and burial stones, is now open to the public as a historical monument. A small museum has also been established in the area, showcasing historical information and excavated artifacts from the region.
