Karakol

Karakol is located in eastern Kyrgyzstan, near Lake Issyk-Kul, 380 kilometers from the capital and 150 kilometers from the China-Kyrgyzstan border. It is the capital of Issyk-Kul Region. The city is the fourth largest in Kyrgyzstan and also an important tourist destination.

Karakol is the starting point for exploring the Tian Shan Mountains. From here, visitors can access the southern and eastern parts of the range, making it an outstanding destination for hiking, skiing, and mountain biking. The city is popular for its array of attractions, most notably the Dungan Mosque, a wooden mosque built between 1907 and 1910 by Chinese artisans for the local Dungan community. There is also a regional museum that showcases Lake Issyk-Kul petroglyphs, Scythian bronze art, and more. The bustling weekend market is a great place to experience local traditional life.

Karakol is also well known as a skiing destination. A ski resort just 20 minutes’ drive from the city is favored for its affordable prices and well-equipped facilities, attracting numerous skiing enthusiasts.
